Stress
1.Stress is the emotional feeling caused by the pressures of everyday living!

It's unavoidable!  It's normal! Everyone experiences it.

Coach wants me to start the big game tomorrow!  No sweat! Everyone expects so much of me!!  I can't stand it!

Some stress helps you get things done.  Too much stress can drive you nuts!  Like a lot of things, you have to learn to deal with it.

2. Stress is caused by lots of things!

Changes in your body  (I feel so .. so ..  weird!  Like everyone's staring at me!)
Too many expectations (Yow!!  If I don't get a lot'a A's this time, I'll be grounded forever!)
Communication breakdowns (My parents never listen to me!  No one does!  I can't handle it!  Everything's so crazy!)
Family breakups (How come Dad moved out?  What's going on, Mom?  Doesn't he like me anymore?)
Keeping up with your friends (Hey! You can't hang out with us dressed like that!  It's not cool!)
... and these trendy times ..  (Eddie Van Rock here, kids ..  Gotta buy our new album or else!)

If you're feeling like you can't handle it, you're "stressed" out!

3. Reactions to stress!

It's common to react to stressful situations in a negative way, especially if you don't know what else to do.  Here's some examples of what can happen when you're stressed out.

No interest in school (School?  Why bother?  I mean .. it's so boring!)
Alcohol/Drug Abuse
Arguing with family and friends (Don't tell me what to do! You all treat me like a lil' kid! I'm out'a here!)
The ulimate perfectionist (I'm first in my class.  Coach loves me. My room is neat. I don't fight with my sis. But, it's NOT enough!)
Hiding from reality (Glad I'm back in my room!  Wish I could stay here the rest of my life!!!!)
Uncontrolled Emotions  (I hate your guts!  or  ..  Why do I feel so sad?)

Let's try some positive approaches!

4. How to handle stress!

Try to figure out how much stress you can take.  When your brain feels like it's on overload, take a break.  Relax.  Use positive methods to get a grip on stress.  Here are a few suggestions.

Talk about it!!  Don't be afraid to ask for help!  There are plenty of people who will - family, friends, teachers, school counselors, etc.
Get some exercise!  Regular physical activity is a sure-fire method to help reduce that stress in your head!
