Our purpose in performance of musicals is to offer the finest children's theatre anywhere! Students learn theater crafts, scenic painting, lighting, and crew duties. Musicals at TRMS are performed entirely without adult direction under group management teams and student directors. The musicals performed include: "Annie," "Oliver," "Bye, Bye, Birdie," "Meet Me In St. Louis," "Scrooge," "The Wizard of Oz," "Broadway Chunks 'N "Travelin' Trunks." Auditions are usually in the first week of September and any student in any performing arts group (band, orchestra or chorus) may audition. Rehearsals are scheduled for most singers once a week until November, the performance usually the week before Thanksgiving. The musical for 2005 will be "Oliver."
The program began ten years ago at Taylor Road, giving opportunities to students to experience a variety of arts related events in Atlanta. The 2004-2005 program includes two series: (a) Van Gogh at the High Museum, and "Oliver" at the Fox, and (b) Bearden at the High Museum, "Hairspray" at the Fox, and "Man Of La Mancha" at the Ferst Center at Ga. Tech. Trips are always on Friday evenings, beginning at 4:30. Discussions with Dr. Sibbald prior to the event are informative, including historical context, artistic concepts, and the content of arts forms. Forms for Arts In The Afternoon 2005-2006 will be available the first week of school in the fall of 2005. Students may purchase both series. There are 4 chaperones (2 teachers) on every trip.
Students interested in training for All State Chorus auditions may begin training in room 505 every morning before school begins. All State singers and Dr. Sibbald will be present to teach and train in sight-reading and pitch reliance. The auditions are set for a Saturday in November 10. Parents will be asked to sign a contract for All State once the student is recommended for the audition. The All State Middle School and high school choruses perform in Savannah.
