Community Service Opportunities

It is the policy of Taylor Road Middle school to reward students who participate in community service projects. Each student in the eigth grade who completes 10 hours of community service will receive 3 points added on to their final semester average. This incentive can be earned each semester in which the student completes ten hours of service. It is the expectation that in the eigth grade the student will actually go out into the community to complete their hours; babysitting at home is no longer considered adequate service to the community. While just about any service the student provides to the community without receiving pay would meet the requirements below is a list of opportunities that have worked well in the past.

Operation Christmas Child - This is a project sponsered by Billy Graham and Samaritan's Purse. Each year thousands of shoeboxes need to be filled, collected, sorted, and shipped to needy children all over the world. Making a shoebox gift or volunteering in the Norcross distribution center is an excellent holiday service project. There is usually an early November deadline for shoeboxes and volunteer spaces fill up fast so get started early.

Project Elbow Grease - Taylor Road will offer several service opportunities each semester. Most of these will involve cleaning up the school and making the outside areas look nice. These events take place on Saturday's and last approximately 3 hours. It is not necessary to stay the entire time but you will need to sign in and out. Watch for signs in the front office for more information on when these events will take place.

Spruill Oaks Library - There is always an opportunity to volunteer at your local library. Spruill Oaks is the busiest library in Fulton County and the only library in the country with a wildlife habitat. Show how much you appreciate the programs offered there by volunteering to shelve books, help out at a used book sale, or work in the wildlife habitat. There is a minimum age of 14 required for all volunteers.

Taylor Road Media Center - Our media staff always need help shelving books and keeping the media center clean. This opportunity is available everyday from 7:30 am until 8:30 am but it is limited to 2 students at a time. Please see me for additional information.
