8th Grade TAG Physical Science
Current Unit: How do Machines Help Me Build Big Things?
This unit introduces students to the six simple machines and challenges them to build a complex machine that can lift a gallon milk jug (40 Newtons) 20 centimeters using just one strand of cotton sewing thread. Scientific concepts covered include work, power, mechanical advantage, and mechanical efficiency. Upcoming projects include designing a Rube Goldberg style machine and a Winter Sports project that asks students to explain the physics behind their favorite winter sport. We will transition into energy and electricity at the end of February.
