In this activity you will be setting up a lemonade stand on a neighbor's yard. Your goal is to make as much profit as possible in 25 days. By operating a lemonade stand you will be practicing some of the math skills required to run a simple business.
Before each day begins you will be given a weather forecast. Based on the temperature and chance of rain, you will decide how many cups of lemonade to make and what price you are going to charge. The rent for your stand is $.75 per day, so if you're not selling, you're losing money. You also have the option of advertising. Advertising attracts more customers to your stand.
When the day is over you will receive a daily report with financial information. You will need to review this report carefully and summarize it in your copy of the data table. These reports are important because in order to make the most profit you will have to use this information (along with your gut feelings) to make decisions. You also have questions to answer based on the daily report.
Helpful Hints (according to the creator of this site):
Start out by setting your price to approximately 25 cents.
Always advertise using at least a dollar or two, your first few dollars of advertising count a lot more than additional ones.
Just because it rains doesn't mean you can't sell any lemonade.
If you lose money and try to regain that money by pressing your browser's 'back' button you will be forced out of business! (GAME OVER)
You will need to register before you can begin. Simply type in your first name(s). Once you have registered, read the directions carefully and then open your business. Let's get your lemonade stand open!
Thanks to Jason Mayans for creating and maintaining The Lemonade Stand, and for his gracious permission to use his wonderful site for this lesson.
